Chris asked me to expand a bit on the link between violence against women as shown in the video that is my joy of the Earth. I’m going to answer briefly and in an indirect way which some people may find contradictory.
Joy and suffering generally speaking are seen as unrelated, distinct as too are animals, including humans, and the earth, God and the creation. We compare one human being to another and this also generates conflicts within ourselves. Today our way of seeing the world has to be one of interdependence. In the Christian tradition when prophets and prophetesses and Jesus and his disciples were persecuted the joy of the earth was present. The joy of understanding that the way to restore justice is not without violence and a great deal of unfair suffering but at the same time a new future is foreseen for the earth and its inhabitants.
Today the worldwide movement of women’s protests speak to the suffering they experience but they are also full of joy in the knowledge that a new era for humanity and the Earth is beginning. It’s a moment in which we try to build a new understanding of what being human means on a planetary scale. Symbolically, the joy of the Earth is the respect for life, all life, which includes women and the ecosystem.
